Powerful smartphones dominate at Mobile World Congress

Barcelona (dpa) – New smartphones that contain even more computing power than their predecessors dominate at Mobile World Congress, the top industry showcase taking place in Barcelona on Monday.
All the main manufacturers other than Apple are exhibiting new products at the annual event.
Nokia began the day with a splash by unveiling the 808 PureView phone, which comes with a built-in 41-megapixel digital camera, offering a higher resolution of sensor than most consumer-grade cameras.
The phone operates with the Finnish company's proprietary Symbian operating system, not the Windows system that Nokia has offered on some of its other high-end phones since November. The PureView technology would be used in other models later, Nokia said.
Models announced on the eve of the show in Spain mainly run Android, the operating system created by Google which has a market share of about half.
HTC, Sony and LG all unveiled flagship phones on Sunday that feature large touchscreens, powerful computer chips and improved cameras.
Apple, whose iPhone makes up nearly a quarter of smartphones currently sold, has never attended the Barcelona fair.
The Mobile World Congress runs until Thursday, with some 1,400 exhibitors and organizers expecting some 60,000 people to attend.
