Peacekeepers wounded in Darfur attack

Two peacekeepers serving in the joint African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) were wounded when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a bus in which they were travelling near the town of El Dein in the western Sudanese region, the mission reported today.The two police officers, who are members of the UNAMID's formed police unit, sustained gunshot wounds in the incident that happened yesterday about one km from the mission's base camp in East Darfur state.They are currently receiving medical treatment in UNAMID's hospital in the city of Nyala, South Darfur.
Five UNAMID personnel have been injured in hostile incidents in Darfur since the beginning of this year.
Fighting between Sudanese Government troops and their allied militias and rebels has caused mass displacement of people in Darfur since 2003.
Deployed at the beginning of 2008, UNAMID is tasked with protecting civilians, promoting an inclusive peace process and helping ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance across Darfur, an arid region on Sudan's western flank.
