CAIRO: Former South African president Nelson Mandela has been admitted to hospital after suffering from abdominal pains, the SAPA news agency reported Saturday. Mandela, who is 93, has been in ill health for some time. He was unable to make a number of public appearances over the past year due to his age and deteriorating health. However, South African officials did say that Mandela's current situation should not be life threatening and they fully expect the iconic leader to return home shortly. The news sparked an outpouring of support in South Africa, with citizens hoping that the figure of the anti-Apartheid movement will return home in full health in the near future.
