London-based Pyramid Research said that the Nigerian telecom market is due to expand by nearly 6 percent financially over the next five years through 2016. The study said that boosting expansion in rural areas will spur more growth in the country. The report entitled ‘Nigeria: New Ministry, Infrastructure Investments and ICT Policies Boost Market' details the country's profile of telecom, media and technology sectors based on proprietary data. The report said the “competitive landscape of Nigeria's telecom sector has forced operators to roll out new infrastructure to improve coverage and quality, which has resulted in a surge of subscription growth and usage.” In a statement on the report, Ronda Zelezny-Green, Associate Research Analyst at Pyramid Research said “Mobile services will benefit handsomely from these investments, with the sector as a whole expanding at a rate of 5.9 percent in dollar terms between 2011 and 2016.” Pyramid added that rural areas of the country have the most to gain and the country should begin to notice their successful expansion in financial terms in the very near future by boosting infrastructure and reach to remote areas of the country. It added that as telecom operators expand lines and infrastructure to rural communities, their profits will also see expansion.
