CAIRO: The United Nations Development Program representative in Egypt James Rowley said on Tuesday the need for a referendum on a new constitution must be had to ensure that it represents all segments of the Egyptian society without the exclusion of any group, explaining its importance in the expression of the diverse interests of all social groups. He added that the United Nations would be willing to help Egypt during this stage through sharing different experiences of other countries in the drafting of the constitution to support the country during the transition to a democratic country based on a constitution. He noted that the constitution should “reflect the transition experienced by Egypt in the current period,” stressing that the new constitution will express the change in the structure of Egypt, “which will resist the various challenges.” Rowley said during a workshop held by the Social Contract Center of the Center for Information and Decision Support of the Cabinet, on Tuesday, that the process of agreeing on a new constitution for Egypt at the moment “is the responsibility of everyone in the Egyptian society and requires combined efforts by all citizens and the existence of connections between the citizen and the government.” Rowley noted that the constitution-drafting process is “purely Egyptian, [and] must be done through the consensus of all political forces and social classes to outline constitutional articles that reflect the transition phase undergone by Egypt.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/x87eR Tags: Constitution, Draft, featured, UN, United Nations Section: Egypt, Latest News
