SINGAPORE: A British sex education book has been barred from sale in Malaysia after the country said the volume had “graphic illustrations.” Britain's Home Affairs Ministry confirmed the halting of the book's sale in Malaysia on Wednesday. The office said it would temporarily stop the sale of the book Where Did I Come From to study if the contents could harm Malaysians' moral character. The 44-page book, written by Peter Mayle in 1973 for children and their parents, describes the reproductive process from intercourse to birth. The Home Affairs Ministry said its action was prompted by complaints from concerned citizens. It said bookstores nationwide agreed to pull the book while the investigation was being conducted. It comes as Malaysia continues to crackdown on literature it believes is against the “moral code” of the Islamic nature of the country, a government official told Bikyamasr.com on Wednesday. “We believe that Malaysia is a unique country and we do not need to have these texts that teach our people immorality,” said the official, who was not authorized to speak to the media, but who had been part of a committee to review books published in the country. Asked how a sex education book would be seen as immoral, the official said “the images of nudity are not needed in discussing these issues and we Malaysians have our own books to educate our young people.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/TgG3e Tags: Book, Malaysia, Sex Education, UK Section: East Asia, Health, Latest News, Written Word
