Amman (dpa) – Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh indicated Tuesday that his government had no plans to recall the Jordanian ambassador from neighboring Syria as have other Arab states. However, he told parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee that Amman was dissatisfied with the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. ”Keeping the Jordanian ambassador in Damascus does not necessarily mean that Jordan endorses what is going on in Syria. We are against violence and support stopping bloodshed,” Judeh was quoted by the official Petra news agency as telling the lawmakers. ”We are following up the situation in Syria closely and we are going to take part in the meeting of the friends of Syria due to convene in Tunis on Friday,” he added. The six member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as well as Tunisia and Egypt have pulled out their envoys from Damascus to protest military operations against civilians by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The Jordanian minister said that his country was ”against meddling in the internal affairs of any Arab country and we reject foreign military intervention in Syria and abide by the Arab consensus in this respect”. Judeh spoke as the government struggles to ensure relief materials and housing facilities for several thousands of Syrian refugees who fled to Jordan for safety over the past months.
