Jerusalem (dpa) – A Palestinian prisoner who has been on hunger strike for 66 days to protest his incarceration without trial has decided to end his fast after Israel agreed he will be released, the Israeli State Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday. Khader Adnan reached a deal with State Prosecutors an hour before the Supreme Court was due to hear an appeal against his administrative detention. The measure allows Israel to detain people deemed a security risk for six months or longer without trial, or without making the charges against them public. The appeal hearing, originally scheduled for Thursday, had been brought forward by two days. Adnan, a member of the Islamic Jihad Organization, was arrested in his village near the northern West Bank city of Jenin in December. Under the deal struck Tuesday, Israel will not request to extend Adnan's administrative detention, which is due to end on April 17. “This is a victory of the Sheikh (Adnan) over the occupation,” his wife Randa told the Israeli Ma'ariv daily.
