Baghdad (dpa) – Saudi Arabia has named an ambassador to Iraq, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday, the first such appointment since 1990 when relations between the two countries strained over Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Fahd bin Abdul-Mohsen al-Zaid, Saudi Arabia's envoy to Jordan, will also serve as ambassador to Iraq, the ministry added. Al-Zaid will continue to reside in the Jordanian capital Amman. Al-Zaid will be the first Saudi ambassador to Iraq since troops of the then-leader Saddam Hussein invaded neighboring Kuwait. Relations between the two countries remained strained following the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. In 2009, Iraq named Ghanim Alwan al-Jumaily as its first ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
