Tel Aviv (dpa) – An Israeli couple have been in divorce proceedings for the past 39 years, while a lingering argument over the distribution of their joint property has prevented them from finally signing the papers, Israeli media reported Tuesday. The lawyers who first dealt with the case have since become judges or retired, while the case has dragged on for longer than many marriages last. According to the Yediot Aharanot daily, the unnamed couple opened divorce proceedings in 1973. Since then they have moved into separate homes, while one has paid – and the other received – maintenance for the children, but they have been unable to agree on how to divide up their possessions, so their divorce has not gone through. The couple recently returned to court, this time fighting over the sale of their joint apartment. According to the Israeli daily, the wife has declared she is determined to agree once and for all how the property should be divided and, after 39 years, finally begin her new life.
