SANA'A: The Somali embassy in Sana'a, Yemen, issued a warning to the central government saying that its intelligence services had picked up on widespread movement of al-Shabab militants towards Yemen as the men were seeking to join forces with operatives in the country and across the Arabian Peninsula. The move came as no real surprise to the Yemeni government since al-Shabab announced only a week ago that it was planning to send some if its fighters to Yemen to “help their brothers in arms.” Hussein Hajji Ahmed, the Somali ambassador to Yemen, told reporters that the militants had been using the flow of refugees to cross over to the country undetected for the past few weeks. He added that the idea of an alliance between al-Shabab and al-Qaeda was extremely worrisome as it “could lead to a dangerous trend and destabilize the entire region as the two would coordinate their attacks against government forces and possibly ships.” Al-Shabab has notoriously used piracy to finance their operations. Since Yemen sits on the world major oil route, such collaboration would be catastrophic and disrupt world trade.
