CAIRO: A British diplomatic source has confirmed that the foreign ministers of Egypt and the United Kingdom will hold talks in London on February 22 on “various topics of mutual concern,” including the fate of fugitive ex-Minister of Finance Youssef Boutros Ghali, the state-run MENA news agency reported on Friday. The British diplomat in charge of political and economic affairs at the British Embassy in Egypt Daniel Drake said that both Foreign Ministers Mohamed Kamel Amr and William Hague stated that the case of Ghali will be discussed during the scheduled meeting, noting that Egypt and Britain do not have an extradition agreement, which means the UK is not required by law to extradite the former minister. The Egyptian government has convicted Ghali on corruption charges. According to Drake, “the British foreign minister and his Egyptian counterpart will discuss the delivery of Boutros Ghali to Cairo next Wednesday.” Drake's official response came as reporters asked him about the non-extradition of Ghali to Egypt, despite being convicted by the Egyptian courts. Boutros Ghali, who is wanted by the Egyptian authorities on charges of “financial corruption,” and has been sentenced 30 years in absentia, lives openly in London.
