DUBAI: A remote village in the southwestern part of Nepal burned a women to death after residents accused her of being a witch. Police said a group of villagers in the Bhagauda village in the Chitwan district in the country beat and then set 40-year-old Theganidevi Mahato on fire using kerosene. Ten people have so far been arrested for involvement in the crime. Rights groups say hundreds of women in rural Nepal are abused after being accused of being witches. The murder of the woman comes only one day after a man stoned to death his three daughters elsewhere in the country. According to eKantipur news website, Bhakta Bhahadur Rumba, 35, was arrested by police in connection to the stoning of his 7-, 9-, and 12-year-old daughters. The killings occurred Thursday night in the Makwanpur district of the country, some 100 kilometers south of Kathmandu. Rumba was believed to be mentally ill. Police said the incident occurred while the mother was attending a relative's wedding. This is, according to human rights activists in the country, the first such stoning that they know of in the country. Activists told Bikyamasr.com that they hope the government investigations “will take seriously these accusations and ensure this sort of action will not happen again.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/xQ8Pl Tags: Murder, Nepal, Witchcraft Section: Latest News, South Asia, Women
