CAIRO: Anthony Shadid, an American journalist of Lebanese descent who worked for the New York Times in the Middle East, has died of an asthma attack in northern Syria, local media reported on Friday. Shadid, 43, suffered Thursday a severe asthma attack as he was leaving the Syrian border for Turkey after spending a week in the Syrian province of Idlib on a reporting assignment, said local sources. His colleague Tyler Hicks, a photographer, was accompanying his body to Turkey, said the New York Times. Shadid, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, had been smuggled by Syrian activists into volatile areas on several occasions over the last few months and covered stories in the provinces of Homs, Hama and Idlib. He had been detained for six days by forces loyal to the now-slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi last March. He will be missed by the media world, who has referred to him as an inspiration for his reporting on the region.
