CAIRO: The new Israeli Ambassador to Egypt Yaakov Amitai arrived back in Cairo on Monday after he left last Thursday due to the general strike and civil disobedience calls in the country. Amitai flew Air Sinai back from Tel Aviv to resume working from his home in Maadi, a upper-class suburb of Cairo. He was appointed in December. The Israeli embassy remain without a headquarters after their last home in a residential building in Dokki, Giza, was stormed by protesters in September. Prior to the break-in, the Egyptian army, who was protecting the embassy built a wall to keep protesters out, which provoked the crowd. Young men climbed up the exterior of the building and took down the white and blue Israeli Star of David flag and in its place pinned up the Egyptian flag. The previous Israeli ambassador was flown out of the country then for his protection and was later replaced. The Israeli embassy said they will not relocate until the safety of the staff is guaranteed. Anti-Israel sentiment seems to be growing stronger in Egypt after the revolution, as the Jewish state had previously defended ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak and called him a “valuable” friend. Many protesters called for the end, or at least the rewriting of, the 1979 peace treaty with Israel, allowing for Egypt to have more rights under the Camp David Accords.
