Arab League set to discuss international observer mission to Syria

Cairo (dpa) – Arab League foreign ministers are to meet in Cairo Sunday to discuss a proposal for a joint observer mission with the United Nations to Syria, according to sources at the pan-Arab body.
The talks are to be preceded by a meeting of the foreign ministers of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council that recently expelled Syria's envoys, according to the sources.
The Syrian National Council, a major opposition grouping, has said it expects the Arab officials to recognize it as the “legitimate” representative of the Syrian people.
The meetings follow a day after at least 50 people were reported killed in fresh violence that included a seventh consecutive day of shelling by the military of restive areas around the central city of Homs.
It also comes just days after Russia and China vetoed a resolution at the UN Security Council aimed at ending the bloodshed.
The Arab League suspended its mission in Syria last month due to the escalating violence.
