SANA'A: Defected Yemeni General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, a once former ally and staunch defender of the regime who switched his allegiance from President Ali Abdullah Saleh to the revolution in March last year, dodged another assassination attempt in the country. The general, who swore then to defend the revolutionaries, pledging to act as a shield for the young men and women demanding democracy, was allegedly the target of yet another assassination attempt against his person by men loyal to President Saleh. His office told Bikyamasr.com that the general had been shot several times in his abdomen, requiring him to have urgent medical attention after men believed to have been paid by President Saleh fled the scene. “The men were wearing the 1st Armored Division uniforms. They just waited for Gen. Mohsen to leave his office and opened fire on him,” said a man present during the incident under cover of anonymity for he wasn't allowed to talk to the press. “The general has been the victim of a vicious campaign against his character and the motives behind his backing up of the revolution by those loyal to the regime. What the public does not know is that it has been the third attempts on his life in the past month alone. Saleh loyalists are trying to engage the 1st Armored Division into a military confrontation in an attempted coup…it will not work, we will remain strong,” warned one of Mohsen's officers. Interestingly, this assassination attempt, which took place three days ago was followed yesterday by reported explosions and gunshots in the Hasaba area, near the general's military base, north of the capital.
