Amsterdam (dpa) – A photo taken in Yemen during the Arab Spring uprising has been chosen as Press Photo of the Year for 2011, the World Press Photo Contest announced in Amsterdam on Friday. The photo, taken by Samuel Aranda on October 15, shows a woman holding a wounded relative in her arms, inside a Sana'a mosque serving as a field hospital for demonstrators against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. “The winning photo shows a poignant, compassionate moment, the human consequence of an enormous event … a living image of the courage of ordinary people that helped create an important chapter in the history of the Middle East,” said the head of the jury, Aidan Sullivan. Aranda was on assignment for the New York Times. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/4hQYT Tags: Arab Spring, Photo, World Press Section: Latest News, Media
