CAIRO: A Bedouin tribe in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula have kidnapped some 17 Egyptian border police after one of its tribal members was killed, security sources were reported to have said. Details of the alleged kidnapping are still murky, but according to local newspapers, the tribe took the border guards in the late afternoon on Thursday along the tenuous border with Israel. The kidnappers are reportedly detaining the guards somewhere in the desert near the border. Security sources confirmed to Bikyamasr.com that negotiations continue between the military leadership and sheikhs of the tribe to have the military officers released. According to an informed Bedouin source in al-Arish, the military officers have “not been harmed” and “are being held to demand justice for the killing of one of our own.” The source, who asked for anonymity, told Bikyamasr.com that “we Bedouin have been shoved and killed and pushed away from the future of this country and we will not stand for it.” Tensions have been rising in the Sinai as Bedouin demand their rights be upheld by the transition government. Gas pipelines running to Israel and Jordan have been attacked 12 times since Egyptians ousted President Hosni Mubarak on February 11, 2011.
