DUBAI: In yet another sign that Dubai police continue to push women's rights and sexual violence to the backburner, a British woman who reported an attempted rape has been met with police saying the attacker was “seduced” by her attire. The unnamed British woman was attacked by an Afghan man in the city as she was jogging. According to Emirates 24/7, the man had waited for her to reach a deserted area and grabbed her and covered her mouth. He then tore off her pants and shoes before the woman, who was visiting the country, was able to escape his hold and went to the police. “The man said he was seduced by the way the woman was dressed,” Dubai police commander Lt General Dahi Khalfan Tamim said. “Despite the scant information about that man, police units managed to identify him, locate his whereabouts and get him.” According to Yousra, a Emirati woman and victim of a sexual assault, the fact that police are not discounting the man's argument that she “seduced” her attacker shows the struggle many women face in the country. “When I went to the police after being assaulted, the officer's first question was to ask what I was wearing when the attack happened. This is what they do,” she told Bikyamasr.com, asking that he surname remain anonymous. “The police and the courts here are less likely to find a man guilty or sentence them to long time in jail if a woman was not covered from top to bottom,” she said. Reports in the UAE say police and the prosecution are saying that the Afghan attacker suffers from “psychological disorders.” Khalil Al Mansoori, Director of the Dubai Criminal Investigation Department, told the Emarat Alyoum newspaper that the Afghan works at a private firm and is suffering from psychological problems. “Perhaps this was the reason that made him try to rape the woman … he confessed that he was tempted by her sports wear,” he said, quoted by the Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum. It is unclear if the man will face charges. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/8B4Ta Tags: Afghan, Dubai, Police, Rape Section: Latest News, United Arab Emirates, Women
