CAIRO: The Israeli foreign ministry congratulated on Thursday Egypt on the inauguration of its first post-revolutionary parliament earlier this week, saying it hoped Cairo would “uphold the importance of peace and stability.” The statement added that “Israel extends its congratulations to the people of Egypt for its efforts to achieve freedom, democracy and economic development.” There are increasing worries in Israel that the new parliament, with a majority Islamist parties wielding the power, the 1979 peace treaty with Israel could be on its way out. “We send the new parliament our wishes of constructive and fruitful work for the well-being of the Egyptian public,” it added. The statement continued: “We trust Egypt will continue to uphold the importance of peace and stability in our region.” For his part, the newly elected Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament, member of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed Saad el-Katatni, rejected the official congratulatory letter from the Speaker of the Knesset Reuven Rivlin, where the latter called on him to visit Israel and deliver an address to the Knesset.
