Riyadh (dpa) – Saudi Arabian security forces arrested nine people for their alleged involvement in the attack of a policemen in the mainly Shiite eastern province of Qatif, the spokesman of the Interior Ministry said Tuesday. “Security forces raided a hideout on Monday where nine people who were behind the events were located and arrested them all,” Mansur al-Turki said in a statement. Earlier this month, the ministry said three policemen were injured when their patrol in Qatif came under fire from unknown gunmen. Qatif has for months been a central point for protests by the Shiite minority, who have called for political reforms in the ultra-conservative Sunni-ruled kingdom, where protests are illegal. One protester was killed in clashes between security forces and Shiite protesters in the province last week. The government refers to the protesters as “rioters” and has repeatedly accused “foreign instigators” of financing the unrest. Saudi authorities recently published the names of 23 Shiites wanted on charges of carrying out a “foreign agenda” in the eastern region of the Gulf country.
