CAIRO: A peaceful demonstration in the Gaza Strip buffer zone that began around 10:30 on Tuesday morning devolved into chaos when 50 rounds of live ammunition was fired directly at Palestinian and international solidarity activists, according to a press release from the Palestinian International Solidarity Movement activist group. The live ammunition and a few tear gas canisters were fired from Israeli military watchtowers, targeting the demonstrators. No injuries were sustained, however. Activists plan to continue their demonstration. An Israeli military tank took position 15 minutes after the ammunition was fired, and at least two Israeli soldiers took to the ground. The activist group reported that the gunfire ceased for 15 minutes and then resumed. Protests in the buffer zone, a 300-meter zone between Israel and the Gaza Strip, are controversial, as Israel mandates that no Palestinians may enter the territory.
