At least 15 people were killed as gunmen opened fire on fishermen in southern Philippines on Tuesday, military officials confirmed to Bikyamasr.com. “The attack took place on the sea coast and has seen at least 15 dead and many others wounded,” a military source said on condition of anonymity. At least three others are reportedly in critical condition from the attack off Sibago Island, part of the Basilan province, some 900 kilometers south of the capital, Manila. The fishermen were aboard three boats when the suspects opened fire on them, Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang told local media in announcing the attack. Cabangbang said the navy dispatched teams to pursue the perpetrators and police were investigating. Attacks by pirates and Muslim rebels against fishing boats and commercial vessels are a problem in southern Philippine waters.
