DUBAI: Forging sick leave documents can lead to prison, three Abu Dhabi residents discovered this week, the official WAM news agency reported. The Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution has ordered three hospital workers to be detained for 14 days pending investigation over the faked sick leave. The hospital in the United Arab Emirates capital, which was not named, uncovered the falsified documents and turned over the employees to the local prosecution. “The suspects used to SMS the nurse, an Asian national, who would prepare sick leaves certificates for them upon order,” reported WAM. “Certificates were attested by Abu Dhabi Health Authority who certified the originality of the seals.” Fellow medical workers in the country, however, say the long hours required by the government and hospital management will lead to more cases such as this. Mohamed, a nurse in Dubai, told Bikyamasr.com that he often takes sick leave “every now and then” even though he is not ill. “I sometimes need a break and after working sometimes 5 straight days with little sleep, it is nice to be able to recover and get my mind back working properly,” he said. “The crackdown on this will hurt hospitals across the country.” It is unclear what final penalty the three workers could face if found guilty of fraud.
