Kunduz, Afghanistan (dpa) – The death toll from heavy snow and avalanches rose to at least 28 in a mountainous northern province of Afghanistan, a government spokesman said on Thursday. The avalanches happened last week in several districts of Badakhshan province where roads have been cut, making it hard for rescuers. Several houses were still buried under snow. Abdul Marof Rasikh, the provincial governor's spokesman, said that 28 people including women and children have been killed and more than 40 others injured since snowfall began in Badakhshan. Afghan army helicopters have supplied food and transported rescuers to the people trapped by snow in remote villages and areas, the spokesman said. Afghanistan's northern areas see heavy snowfall every winter. Last week, heavy snow began falling in the national capital Kabul and in northern parts of the country. In February 2010, more than 160 people were killed in an avalanche in Salang pass, which links Kabul with the north of the country.
