Addis Ababa (dpa) – Five tourists in a German-Austrian tour group have been killed in northeast Ethiopia, according to Ethiopian state television. At least one German and one Austrian were among those killed, Bild daily reported Tuesday, quoting security officials in Berlin. An additional two tourists have been injured and one more has gone missing in an attack that occurred on the border with neighboring Eritrea. The attack occurred in the Danakil desert, which extends to the north-east of Ethiopia and is one of the hottest and poorest regions of the world. It is populated by the nomadic Afar people. In 2007, five Europeans – four Britons and a French citizen – were taken hostage and released unharmed, in exchange for a ransom. A German foreign ministry spokesman told dpa that they were “investigating” the report, while the embassy in Addis Ababa had no information regarding the incident.
