CAIRO: Spanish prosecutors on Tuesday approved of a request from the Egyptian government to extradite Magda Hussein Salem, the daughter of the famous fugitive Egyptian business tycoon Hussein Salem. On Tuesday, the Spanish court heard statements from the prosecution, the Egyptian government, Salem herself, as well as her defense team. The Spanish General Prosecution stressed that it approve of the Egyptian request to extradite Magda Salem, as the evidence, documents and and investigations provided by the Egyptian government met the legal requirements for extradition. The Spanish court said it would also hold a session on February 9 to consider the request to extradite Hussein Salem himself. Another court session will take place on Thursday regarding a request to extradite Hussein's son Khaled as well. Hussein Salem, an associate of former President Hosni Mubarak, was sentenced to seven years in jail and fined US $4 billion for profiteering and money laundering in October. Salem was a partner in the East Mediterranean Gas Co, and was accused of selling natural gas to Israel at a discounted price. According to the courts, he made about US $2 billion in money laundered from the gas deal. Salem and his children were sentenced in absentia, as they fled Egypt for Spain when the protests that overthrew the former regime started last January. Former president Hosni Mubarak is being investigated under the same charges.
