CARIO: The Gallery, one of the newest editions to Cairo's gallery art scene, is now presenting an inaugural exhibition “Collage: 100 Years On,” inspired by the introduction of collaging into fine arts just 100 years ago. Curator Maie Yanni pays tribute to this art form using some of the best artists in the region to create an collection of diverse works. “This group exhibition celebrates collage, which was pioneered by Picasso and Braque in 1912, and has since permeated through pop surrealism and every art movement,” commented Yanni in an interview with Ahram Online. The Collage remains a generally underrated medium according to Yanni, and the artist hopes to dispel preconceptions of collage as an arts and crafts hobby rather than a serious art form by creating a collection of strong pieces that take a journey through the contemporary Egyptian collage. She explains that the exhibition was set up “to educate art connoisseurs in Cairo on the different styles of collage produced by Egyptian and regional artists.” The exhibition features a group of various Egyptian and regional artists such as Huda Lutfi, Hany Rashed and Mounir Canaan, among others. The pieces are varied and distinct in style. Lutfi presents her infamous and heavily criticized shoe moulds covered in Sufi writing, while Rashed displays expressive works with a pop-art feel. Hisham El-Zeiny's pieces were also a highlight of the exhibition, using mixed media to create collages that reflect Egyptian culture and look beautifully aged. Another highlight was a striking piece by Muataz El-Imam that uses texture to bring life to a small lying figure with playing cards placed across the body. ‘Collage: 100 Years On' is open at The Gallery, 6 Salah Eldin St., Zamalek, Cairo and will conclude on January 15.
