Animal friendly fashion in Lebanon
Published in Bikya Masr on 12 - 01 - 2012

“Best friends are not meant to be abused.” This is the simple but sharp slogan that the online magazine Fashion Beirut, in collaboration with the organization Animals Lebanon, has chosen for its “Fashion Statement” campaign of the year.
The aim of the fashion campaign is clear: to raise awareness of animal welfare in Lebanon and worldwide.
Animals Lebanon is one of the most prominent organizations for the defense of animal rights in the Middle East.
“While we have launched a good number of campaigns, our partnership with the magazine Fashion Beirut has been the most popular until now,” Jason Mier, the executive director of Animals Lebanon, told Bikyamasr.com
“Moreover, lately, a couple of Lebanese celebrities have contacted us because they want to get involved in our projects,” he continued.
“Despite it is quite a new phenomenon in Lebanon, people have been very supportive. We are happy the campaign is starting to pick up momentum.”
Animals Lebanon, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and other international organizations, is now working for the implementation of a law that safeguards animal rights.
The Lebanese organization has presented a very comprehensive draft law, which aims to regulate and improve the conditions of animal welfare in Lebanon.
“Despite there are other obvious priorities for the Lebanese government, and we do not receive financial help from them, they have been very cooperative,” said Mier.
The organization counts now the support of 128 parliamentarians and aims to secure 25,000 signatures in support of the enactment of the animal law.
There are so many different ways to help, and the easiest one is joining the online campaign that can be found on their website.
By signing the petition, Animals Lebanon says one will help enacting national animal protection and welfare legislation.
“We want to tell the population these laws are not only for the benefit of animals, but for the benefit of the society as a whole, in terms of economy, health and education,” added Mier.
