Mexico City (dpa) – Mexican authorities released Wednesday the first official figure of people killed in incidents linked to organized crime for nine months in 2011. According to the data, 12,903 people were killed January-September, giving a monthly average of 1,433. For the whole of 2010, the authorities counted 15,273 deaths. The Office of Mexico's Attorney General said 47,515 people have been killed over the past five years, amid the crackdown on the powerful drug cartels conducted by Mexican President Felipe Calderon. Last year's most violent Mexican city was again Ciudad Juarez, across the border from the US city of El Paso, Texas, with a nine-month total of 1,206 killings. In all of 2010, there were 3,000 killings. The well-known seaside resort city of Acapulco had 795 deaths linked to organized crime, while Mexico's industrial powerhouse Monterrey had 399.
