Addis Ababa/Kinshasa (dpa) – At least 26 people have been killed in attacks by Rwandan rebels in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, the Congolese army said Thursday. The attacks were blamed on the Democratic Liberation Forces of Rwanda (FDLR), a Hutu rebel group from neighboring Rwanda. According to Congo's Radio Okapi, the attacks were carried out in several towns in South Kivu province at the beginning of the week. In the report, human rights activist spoke of 40 deaths. A spokesman for the military said the inhabitants of the area had been targeted because of their support for other rebel groups operating in the area. Soldiers have been deployed to the area. The rebels, some of whom were among the Rwandans who crossed the border in the wake of the 1994 genocide, have for years had a presence in eastern Congo. The FDLR played a key role in the killing of an estimated 800,000 people from the Tutsi ethnic group and moderate Hutus over 100 days.
