New Delhi (dpa) – At least five people, including two children, were killed Wednesday in the collapse of a New Delhi building built of suspected poor quality materials, police said. “The structure came down as it was old and weak,” said local police officer Abhinandanm, who uses only one name. “It appears to have been made of substandard material.” At least eight people were injured in the single-storey structure in the western area of Mundka. Police rejected news reports that the building collapsed after a gas cylinder blast. Building collapses are not uncommon in the Indian capital, and shoddy construction is often blamed. In September, seven people were killed in a building collapse in the congested old quarters of the city. In November 2010, at least 67 people died when a five-storey building collapsed in the eastern area of Laxmi Nagar.
