Tehran (dpa) – Iran tested the advanced Qader stealth cruise missile during navy maneuvers in the Persian Gulf on Monday, state media reported. This was the first successful test of the ground-to-ship missile, maneuver spokesman Admiral Mahmoud Moussavi told official news agency IRNA. He added that the missiles Nassr and Noor would also be tested on the final day of the military exercises. The Qader (“Capable”) missile has a standard range of 200 kilometers and can be deployed against sea targets, fired from the land or from sea platforms. Local media quoted Moussavi as saying that the Qader had been upgraded to function as a long-range missile, although they did not say what distance it could cover. The test took place amid a dispute with the United States over earlier threats by Iran to block the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route.
