Kabul (dpa) – Gunmen in southern Afghanistan have shot dead a local council chief along with his son and a grandson, the provincial governor's office said on Wednesday. Abdul Baqi, a local council chief of Musa Kala district of Helmand province, was traveling in a vehicle to his home on Tuesday evening with his son and a grandson when insurgents opened fire on the car. “Baqi and his son died on the spot and his grandson died from wounds he sustained during shootings later in the military hospital,” a statement from the office said. The gunmen escaped. The Taliban-led insurgents have been targeting Afghan officials and pro-government figures, tribal leaders. The statement also said that an insurgent commander Mullah Abdul Rahim was killed on Monday in a NATO-led air strike as he was trying to plant a roadside bomb in Naw Zad district of the same province.
