Warsaw (dpa) – France is to donate 5 million euros (6.54 million dollars) to help maintain the Auschwitz-Birkenau state museum at the site of the former Nazi concentration camp, Polish museum officials said Tuesday. French Prime Minister Francois Fillon pledged to pay out the aid – spread over five years as of 2012 – to help preserve and conserve work at the museum, officials said. The museum has so far raised 97 million euros to help finance a long-term conservation project at the former death camp, which operated during World War II in Nazi-occupied Poland. Museum officials say they still need 23 million euros more to complete the project. The Nazis killed some 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, between 1940-1945 at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
