SANA'A: Despite the announcement of a ceasefire, Taiz, Yemen's second largest city, was for another day, the ground for violent confrontations between the government armed forces and protesters on Monday. Eyewitnesses said that Republican Guards were seen shooting live ammunition at a crowd, which had just started its march. One woman died instantly, shot in the chest. “Protesters were running and trying to hide from the hundreds of bullets that were shot by the republican guards,” said Nusari a protester in “Liberty Square” the epicenter of the revolutionary movement in Taiz. Defiant of the armed forces, demonstrators went on marching throughout Taiz for 3 hours, oblivious to the danger and the crackling sound of fire arms breaking around them. Human rights activists in Taiz also reported that dozens of families had been cut out from access to potable water as continuous fighting and shelling were making it impossible to venture outside. “Some families have been without water for the past 2 days,” a local resident who managed under cover of darkness to smuggle his relatives out of the town, told Bikyamasr.com. Revolutionaries are calling on the international community to open a probe into the events as they say the regime is in breach of not only the GCC brokered power-transfer but also international laws.
