The 2011 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Under-23 tournament is in full swing in Morocco with the top U-23 teams from Africa taking part. This is the first tournament of its kind created by CAF. The tournament was originally planned to take place in Egypt but due to ongoing security concerns Morocco stepped up to host. Egypt is playing in the 2011 CAF U23 Championships The competition will not only crown a champion of its own but it serves as a qualification for the 2012 London Olympics. The top three teams of the tournament will gain automatic entry for the Summer Olympics and the fourth will feature in a playoff versus a team from the Asia Football Conference (AFC). Eight teams are facing off including perennial African heavyweights Egypt, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria. The teams are divided into two groups. Group A contains Morocco, Algeria, Senegal, and Nigeria. Egypt, Ivory Coast, Gabon, and South Africa square off in Group B play. After two matches played Egypt sits second in its group on three points. So far the Pharaohs have had an up and down competition, beating Gabon 1-0 then losing to first place team Ivory Coast 1-0. If Egypt does not lose to South Africa in their next match they will move onto the semifinals, which will contain the top two from each group. The semifinals start on December 6, then the final will be played in Marrakech on December 10.
