On Saturday it was announced that six Togo football players had died in an accident that occurred near the city of Atakpame, north of Lome, as top flight team Etoile Filante was traveling to Togo's second largest city of Sokode for Sunday's league game against Semassi. None of the identities of those involved have been released. It is believed that a burst tire caused the bus to fall into the ravine. According to a government statement President Faure Gnassingbe ordered that the injured be taken to the military wing of a hospital in Lome. Etoile Filante is a seven-time Togo national league champion and was runner-up in Africa's continental club competition in 1968.
