CAIRO: A coalition of Egyptian human rights organizations condemned the interim Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) for its detention and military prosecution of leading Egyptian activist and blogger, Alaa Abdel Fattah, and the summoning of Ahmed Derag for investigation. The condemnation came in response to the SCAF's 15-day extension of Abdel Fattah's detention and its summoning of university professor and National Association for Change, Ahemd Derag, for investigation. Derag has been summoned by the SCAF on the grounds of massacre at Maspero on October 9 in which 27 were killed and hundreds of others injured. The human rights coalition expressed that the SCAF is using similar anti-democratic tactics to discredit pro-democratic organizations, movements, and activists, as used by the ousted Hosni Mubarak regime. “We will not give up on the rule of law, and will not retreat from the demand to end military trials for civilians. There is no alternative for an independent judicial committee to investigate the massacre of Masspero, which we clearly accuse members of the Armed Forces its implementation this committee should also continue to investigate all the violation committed by the military police of members of the Armed Forces” stated the human rights organizations, according to a press release by the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI).
