LOS ANGELES: Egyptian activist Esraa Abdel Fattah was give a Woman of the Year award at the 2011 Glamour Women of the Year Awards on Monday. The gala, held Monday night at Carnegie Hall in New York, celebrated female influencers from around the globe. Referred to in the United States as the “Facebook girl” for here role in the January uprising in Egypt, she was instrumental in mobilizing support for the uprising that ousted Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak. She also used online media to detail here experiences, which garnered her international support and notoriety. Also winning awards were designer Tory Burch, Senator Gabrielle Giffords and actress Jennifer Lopez. Back in Egypt, Abdel Fattah's award went almost unnoticed, but a few women's activists did take note and said it was a positive step for women in the country. “We are always proud of her and the fact that an international magazine is recognizing her contributions for Egypt is a step in the right direction,” said Marwa Ramadan, a 20-year-old university student in Cairo, who added that Abdel Fattah “is an example of how women in the Middle East should live.” BM
