Eight people have been killed and 7 wounded in Mexico while people were playing volleyball at a local playground. Fransico Cordova, heard of Sinaloa state police, stated in a Saturday press briefing that some of the civilians killed were playing volleyball and others were watching. The volleyball court is in a working-class neighborhood of Culiacan, the state capital. The shooting did not appear to be drug-cartel related, however Sinaloa is the home of Joaquin Guzman, who is a powerful drug cartel leader. Marco Antonio Higuera, Sinaloa's prosecutor, said while it had not been ruled out that the volleyball players and spectators were caught in a crossfire, witnesses told authorities the assailants arrived accompanied by two people with covered faces who pointed out to the assailants who to shoot. Higuera also says the attackers “knew perfectly well who they were going to kill” and that the attack was retaliation between two rival cartels. The Sinaloa state and Culiacan specifically have seen many drug-related attacks. About 45,000 people have died in drug-related attacks since President Calderon announced the “drug war” in 2006. BM
