Champions League: Barca, Milan move on, APOEL victorious, others flounder
Published in Bikya Masr on 02 - 11 - 2011

Reigning champions Barcelona booked their place in the Round of 16 with a comfortable 4-0 win over Czech league champions Viktoria Plzen. Lionel Messi made his contribution to the win in the form of a hat trick while summer signing Cesc Fabregas added to the score line with a header of his own. With 10 points Barca advanced easily out of Group H.
In one of the early kick-offs AC Milan drew 1-1 with Bate Borisov with goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovich and a penalty by Borisov midfielder Renan Bressan. Milan should have done better as they had several opportunities to score; in the end though they could only come up with an Ibrahimovich goal in 22nd minute. The draw gave Milan 8 points, which are enough for them to advance to the next round from Group H.
APOEL Nicosia shocked last years Europe League champions FC Porto with a 2-1 in Cyprus. The win vaulted Nicosia into first place of Group G with 8 points and left Porto in third on 4 points. The game had a frantic finish with two goals in the dying minutes. Hulk equalized for Porto from the penalty spot in the 89th after Nicosia had put away a penalty away earlier in the match. Then Gustavo Manduca became the hero of the night with his winner in the 90th which he put in at close range from a low cross into the box. If the Cypriot side can win either of their next two games (at Zenit St. Petersburg, or against Shakhtar Donetsk) they will make it into the last 16.
English sides Arsenal and Chelsea did not fair as well on Tuesday night with both sides failing to pull out a win in their respective matches. Arsenal, currently first on 8 points, could have made their campaign easier had they come away with a victory against an underwhelming Marseille team. Aaron Ramsey, the hero from the last match against Marseille, had the best chance of the night but his shot from the right side of the penalty area was just wide. The Gunners preserved the clean sheet and the match finished 0-0.
Chelsea had opportunity after opportunity but could not squeeze any more goals out of their match with Racing Genk of Belgium. The final result was 1-1 which put the London side on 8 points, 3 ahead of Valencia who beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 in their Group E match. Brazilian midfielder Ramires blasted in a goal in the 25th which was assisted by Fernando Torres then Chelsea defender David Luiz saw his penalty shot saved well by László Köteles in the 39th minute. In the 61st a Jelle Vossen goal leveled the match and gave Genk their second draw of the campaign.
Wednesday night will see the remaining teams play with enticing match ups such as Bayern Munich vs. Napoli, Villarreal vs. Man City, Inter vs. Lille, and Lyon vs. Real Madrid.
Scores from Tuesday's Fixtures:
Group E: Racing Genk 1-1 Chelsea
Group E: Valencia 3-1 Bayer Leverkusen
Group F: Arsenal 0-0 Marseille
Group F: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Olympiakos
Group G: Zenit St. Petersburg 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk
Group G: APOEL Nicosia 2-1 FC Porto
Group H: Viktoria Plzen 0-4 Barcelona
Group H: Bate Borisov 1-1 AC Milan
