CAIRO: International activists in Gaza yesterday entered their sixth day of a hunger strike, encamped in front of the International Community of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Gaza. The activists are on strike to express their sympathy and support for the ongoing hunger strike of Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails. ”They have been on strike for over two weeks with very basic demands. We will strike with them, and hope that this will help to stop the world's silence about their situation,” said Silvia Todeschini, an Italian activist in Gaza. Palestinian activists in Gaza have called upon the international community to join the hunger strike on Wednesday, 12 October. That have also asked those on Twitter to publicize their participation and solidarity, declating “My name is ( ) and I will go on a hunger strike on Wednesday in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners #TweepStrike #HS4Palestine.” The Palestinian prison hunger strike started on September 27. It was organized to protest inhumane conditions inside of Israeli jails. Last June, Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu tightened the grip on Palestinian prisoners in an attempt to pressure Hamas to free the Israeli prisoner Gilad Shalit. Shalit was officially released yesterday, in exchange for 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. Prisoners have been forced into prolonged solitary confinements, have been denied family visits, and have been obligated to wear handcuffs when meeting lawyers. Thousands of protesters today staged rallies in the West Bank and Jerusalem to show their solidarity, as the hunger strikers in Israeli jails entered the 15th day of their strike. Today in Ramallah at 11:30, a general strike will be launched in all administrative PA offices and non-governmental organizations. BM
