Al-Jazeera's Director General Wadah Khanfar announced he is stepping down from his position after serving the Qatari network for 8 years in the role. Khanfar announced the news on his Twitter account on Tuesday and in a letter sent to his staff. He said it was not a sudden decision and that he informed the organization's chairman earlier of the move. Al-Jazeera is owned by the Qatari royal family. Khanfar began as a correspondent with the network in 1997 and has worked in Africa, Afghanistan and Iraq. “I am fortunate to have had 8 years working with an outstanding group of professionals,” he wrote in his farewell statement. “Today, Al-Jazeera stands as a mature organization and I am confident that the organization will continue to maintain its trailblazing path,” he added in his staff note.
