SAN DIEGO: As a result of the power outage that left millions of residents out of power on Thursday, Sept. 8, San Diego county's Department of Animal Services in California, USA, hosted a microchipping clinic at its shelter near the University of San Diego yesterday, Sept. 11, to help residents include their beloved animal companions in their disaster preparation plans. “During a fire or other emergencies, pets often get separated from their families,” County Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson said. “A microchip greatly increases the chance that those animals will make it home again after the trouble has passed.” A one-time fee of US$20 included registration and microchip services for dogs, cats, and bunnies. Rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs were also offered to all pet owners, regardless of their city of residence. Kudos, San Diego for making the initiative to protect animal lives and keep “family members” together. BM
