CAIRO: Tuesday was announced in many Arab countries to be the beginning of the Eid holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Emirate, Syria, Kuwait, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen announced they are celebrating the first day of the Islamic holiday today. Jordan and Iran, however said the beginning of the Eid is Wednesday. The sighting of the crescent moon by Islamic scholars determines the last day of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid. The Eid holiday, which lasts three consecutive days is for Muslims to celebrate the end of the month of Ramadan and the end of fasting. Popular dishes include fish and sugar cookies, which are consumed during the Eid in addition to purchasing and wearing new clothes. Many Egyptian families tend to celebrate outdoors where they head to public parks and film theaters. BM
