Kenya got another boost to its efforts to increase the use of mobile phones and Internet banking as MobiKash Africa announced it had entered the Kenyan market in an effort to integrate virtual accounts via handsets. According to Business Week, the company will operate across all telecom operators in the country, including Safaricom, Airtel, Orange and Yu. Already, the company has 3,000 agents across the country and according to their website “will allow users to carry out transactions between virtual accounts set up in their handsets and their bank accounts.” The service, MobiKash says, “can link up to 15 accounts at different institutions and can enable transactions between the different accounts. People without bank accounts will be required to open a Popote account.” The only drawback is that withdrawals will only be permitted at MobiKash specific outlets. BM
