The director of communications at Algeria Telecom announced Saturday that Algerians should expect major internet disruptions in the coming days, the Algerian Arabic daily AlKhabar reported Sunday. Abdel Hakim Mezyani attributed the disturbances to maintenance operations on cables that link the network to Marseilles, France and Alexandria, Egypt. Mezyani went onto say that users should expect disturbances until July 28th as repairs continued, and that the state-owned telecom has adopted measures to lessen the effects on Internet service. The official added that Algeria Telecom regrets the inconvenience, but service should improve following the repairs. 13.5 percent of Algerians were online in 2009, according to the World Bank. BM
