A leading technology expert in Nigeria has said that science and technology are the key instruments in bolstering the country's economic progress. Rector at Yaba College of Technology Margaret Ladipo said that if Nigeria wants to enter the global economy with force, they must improve the ICT sectors in the country. Speaking at a three-day conference and exhibition by the World Bank, she argued that only through science and technology development would Nigeria be able to “develop as a nation.” Her comments come as the federal government continues to push for improving the overall economic health of the country and has stated that it wants to break into the top 20 economies globally. Lapido said that these two areas are “crucial” for the country as it pushes forward for the 20-20-20 vision established by the government. “In this competitive era of globalization, science and technology are key to our national development. Management would continue to support ST education and encourage both staff and students in this area,” she said. “Also, innovations and intellectual properties developed in this process would be promoted at every opportunity,” she continued. Lapido added that this type of conference is a “practical way” of creating movement with the sector and across Nigeria and the African continent as a way of boosting investment in the ICT sectors. BM
